After a 34% Drawdown, BlackRock Is Filing a Bitcoin ETF That Sells Downside Protection
Bitcoin is trading around $82,600, about 34% below its October 2025 peak of roughly $126,000, and the new products are not about owning more of it. They are about owning it with a seatbelt. That is a signal about who is buying now, but most of the details that would let you judge the product are not public yet.
What was filed
On October 19, BlackRock filed for the iShares Bitcoin Managed Protect ETF. Per The Block, the fund would offer “upside exposure to [IBIT] and/or similar bitcoin exposure up to an approximate limit, while seeking to provide a level of downside protection.”
It is BlackRock’s third bitcoin ETF filing, after IBIT itself (more than $65 billion in assets) and the Bitcoin Premium Income ETF (BITA) in June 2026.
What the filing coverage did not describe: the mechanism (likely options-based, but that is inference), the upside cap, the level of protection, the fees, or the timing. Until those exist, “downside protection” is a marketing phrase, not a specification. Buffer-style products typically trade away upside to pay for protection, and the cap is what decides whether the trade is worth it.
The rest of the week
- Switzerland: CryptoTimes reports FINMA approved the country’s first retail-accessible spot bitcoin ETF on October 20, with an exemption from standard diversification rules plus custody and disclosure safeguards. We found no second source, so treat it as unconfirmed.
- SpaceX: its Q3 filing shows $1.57 billion in digital assets at September 30 (up 42% quarter on quarter) and 18,712 BTC, confirmed by Arkham, per Benzinga. That puts it seventh among corporate holders, ahead of Coinbase, with a $64 million year-to-date paper loss.
- Strategy Inc.: bought 267 BTC (about $22 million) between October 12 and 18 and now holds 848,517 BTC, funded largely by equity sales. That is a notably small pace for the biggest corporate buyer.
- Price structure: the 24-hour range was roughly $81.3K to $83.2K, with support near $80-81K and resistance at $83-84K. Bollinger Band width is at multi-year tights, which often precedes a large move in an unknown direction (Crypto.news). Liquidations fell from about $1 billion on October 15 to a few hundred million.
The tension
The maturing-buyer reading: after a 34% drawdown, demand is shifting from raw exposure to managed exposure: income in June, protection now. Products like that suit advisors and allocators who cannot hold an asset that can fall a third. If that is the marginal buyer, bitcoin’s volatility may matter less to flows than it used to.
The macro-asset reading: bitcoin is currently trading as a rates and equity-correlated risk asset, and the same hot September CPI (3.7% year on year) and Fed path hitting tech stocks is driving it. Wrappers do not change what the underlying does. If a hiking Fed keeps pressure on risk assets, a buffer ETF mostly lets buyers feel better about the same exposure.
The corporate-treasury picture also cuts both ways. SpaceX holding a large position it did not build in public is a sign of mainstream acceptance. Strategy slowing to $22 million a week is a sign its funding model has less room than it did.
Saylor says the bottom was just under $60,000 and sees a path above $100,000. More cautious managers see a year-end range of $85-95K, and prediction markets give modest odds of a clean break to $100K. None of those views is evidence about this week.
A sourcing note
Most price and flow figures come from crypto trade outlets that differ slightly with each other on peak, price and timing. The Swiss approval has one source. The BlackRock filing details are secondhand from a single article and the product’s mechanics are undisclosed. SpaceX’s holdings are the best-supported claim here, because Arkham independently confirmed them.
What we’re watching
- The actual prospectus terms: structure, cap, fee, and how much protection costs in forgone upside.
- Whether the SEC treats Managed Protect differently from a plain spot ETF.
- Whether the October 27-28 FOMC meeting breaks the tight range, and whether $80K holds.
- Whether a second source confirms the FINMA approval.
